Bo Ruud Moves to Strongside Linebacker

Bo Ruud is a bona fide Nebraska Football star.  His name can be heard echoing through Memorial Stadium when he makes a big tackle on game day and he was recently featured on the cover of Lindy's regional Big 12 magazine this past month.

With all of this success, you would expect Ruud to stay put in his position that made him so successful.  But this next season Ruud will switch positions from weakside linebacker to strongside linebacker.  Coach Callahan wants to use Ruud's versatility covering tight ends and also take advantage of his strength as a blitzer.

The position switch will open up the weakside position for Steve Octavian who has been plagued by injuries in the past couple of seasons.  Nebraska football fans are excited to see the talented Octavian get more playing time but are probably more excited to see both Ruud and Octavian on the field together. 

Run and Gun Camp a Huge Success for Nebraska Football

Nebraska football tickets are hard to find for the big games at Memorial Stadium, but many high school coaches and students traveled to Lincoln this past week to watch participate in smaller games.  48 teams made up of 7 high school athletes participated in the first annual Run and Gun 7 on 7 passing tournament. The players and coaches from the 48 schools learned and practiced basic fundamentals of the passing game, and later competed in a passing tournament.

Nebraska prep football is known for having run dominated offenses, but with Coach Callahan and the introduction of the west coast offense with the Huskers, high school teams all around Nebraska are starting to understand that they cannot only rely on the running game.

The tournament was a huge success this year; the coaches and organizers of the event want a bigger event next year with 64 teams instead of 48.

Nebraska Football Picks Up Tight End for 2008

Tyson Hetzer became the 13th commitment to the 2008 Nebraska football recruiting class on Monday after visiting campus on the weekend.  Hetzer is a Junior College tight end at North Alabama.  He will complete his associates degree in December and come to Nebraska in time for spring training and will have two years of eligibility for the Huskers after that.

According to HuskerExtra.com the 6-7 Hetzer originally went to college in California for basketball but changed his mind halfway through his freshman year.  He moved to North Alabama and redshirted for a season. 

Hetzer fills a much needed hole in the Husker offense as they lose two senior tight ends.  He is known for being a solid athlete who can catch well.

Chris Patrick Enters NFL Supplemental Draft

Former Nebraska football offensive lineman Chris Patrick is electing to skip his senior year with the Huskers to enter the NFL supplemental draft on July 13.  The draft is normally for players who are not going to complete college due to academic reasons but Patrick assured the Lincoln Journal Star that it was for personal family reasons.

Patrick has been training in New Jersey with a former New York Giants offensive lineman to get ready for the draft.  He is one of only two people entering the draft with the other being Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver.

Traditionally not many players are selected in the draft; only 34 players total have been chosen since the draft began in 1977.

2008 Offensive Line Recruits are Top in the Nation

Nebraska football has always been known for having a great offensive line and the 2008 recruiting class looks to continue on this rich tradition.  The 2008 recruiting class already boasts four o-line recruits making up half of all the commits.

Baker Steinkuhler from Lincoln Southeast is in the top 5 for o-line recruits and in the top 25 overall coming in to the 2008 season.  He is supported by Dan Hoch from Iowa, Trevor Robinson from Elkhorn, and Bryce Givens from Colorado.  All of the recruits are 6-5 and taller and weigh upwards of 300 pounds.

All have solid verbal commitments to Nebraska except for Givens who was recently offered a scholarship to Texas.  He ensured the Huskers that he would still attend Nebraska but it raised a stir as it is an unwritten rule in college football that teams are not supposed to offer scholarships to players who have already committed.

Hopefully these recruits are Nebraska football's ticket to a National Championship!

QB Keller Aims to Get Comforitable With Wideouts

This summer, Nebraska football's Sam Keller is working hard conditioning as well as trying to understand the husker playbook for the upcoming football season.  But according to huskerextra.com Keller wants nothing more than to start working with the wide receivers to get comfortable passing to them before the season starts.

Official off-season training and conditioning starts this week and will give Keller a chance to work with new and returning wideouts.  Keller plans to work in between these practices and in his free time with his receivers because he wants to get a feel for their style and how they run their routes. 

Keller will be without go to guy Maurice Purify who has been suspended indefinitely from the Huskers.  He will now focus on senior Nate Swift and Junior Todd Peterson now as they will most likely be the starting wideouts at the beginning of the season.

NU Recruit Gabbert Will Attend Elite 11 Quarterback Camp

Nebraska Football's much talked about four star quarterback recruit Blaine Gabbert earned a ticket to the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp that starts July 23 reported Omaha.com.

The Elite 11 is one of the most highly respected camps in the country for quarterbacks.  It is an invitation only event and brings the top 12 quarterback prospects to southern California to receive instruction and compete.  It is run by the father of NFL quarterback Rob Johnson and has had instruction by professionals such as Drew Brees and Carson Palmer in the past.  Recent quarterbacks to attend have been stars Vince Young and Matt Leinart.

Millard North's Sean Fischer Heavily Recruited

According to the Omaha World Herald, Millard North safety Sean Fischer has garnered over 14 scholarship offers already ,including one from NU.

The massive 6-5, 210 pound Junior is regarded as one of the top players in Nebraska.  Many schools have came and made visits just to make sure that he is actually 6-5 and not lying to lure recruits.

Fischer has already narrowed his college choices to Nebraska, Oklahoma, Iowa State, and Arkansas.  He will make a trip to Oklahoma and Arkansas this summer and will likely visit a NU training camp to meet with the coaching staff and fellow recruits.

Hopefully Fischer will pick up some Nebraska Football tickets for this season and come see what a great team he could join!

Crouch Gives CFL Another Shot

Former Nebraska football player and 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch played his rookie season in the Canadian Football League last year with an abdominal hernia.  According to the Omaha World Herald, team doctors and trainers kept calling the hernia a pulled muscle but Crouch knew something was wrong.

Crouch played in only three games last season but looks to contribute more this season to his team the Toronto Argonauts.  Crouch has to fight for the quarterback position this season with a slew of new quarterbacks including former NFL starter Mike McMahon.

Crouch hopes the league's style will help him earn the starting position.  The Canadian league has wider fields for more quarterback motion and shorter breaks in between plays to quicken the game play.  Both of these traits are good for Crouch who ran the option at Nebraska for years.
