Conference Play Starts Tomorrow

Nebraska football starts conference play against the Iowa State Cyclones tomorrow with the 1:00 game in Lincoln.  The Iowa State game should be the easiest of our conference games this season.  The Cyclones have a relatively inexperienced team with a first year coach.  They are 1-3 currently with their only win coming from the in-state Hawkeyes of Iowa.

Although this should be a great opportunity for the defense to get its groove back, the Cyclones are known for pulling off big upsets.  The Huskers also have to watch out for Gene Chizek's new coaching schemes.  Callahan and the team have been studying tapes of the Texas season last year when Chizek was the Longhorn's defensive coordinator.

The Cyclones have not won a football game in Memorial Stadium for over 30 years.  Lets hope tomorrow we make that number 31.

Lessons Learned Will Help Nebraska Against ISU

The Nebraska football team has seen their weaknesses in the last couple of weeks against Ball State and USC.  Both teams have ran the ball through the D-line and both teams racked up 40 points or more.  This was a rude wake up call to coach Callahan and especially the defense that things need to change.

I believe that the way the Huskers look this Saturday will be different than the way they looked in the past two games.  The NE State Paper reported that in the press conference after the game an enlightened Corey McKeon talked about how the defense has the talent and strength but that "we just need that third aspect of energy. We really lack that out there, and I think that is what has hurt us."  I think that third aspect is confidence.  I believe that the Huskers need to come onto the field and Saturday and show the Cyclones that not only can they win, but they believe they can win.

Nebraska Slips Past Ball State

In a spirited football game on Saturday against the Ball State Cardinals, Nebraska barely slipped by with a unimpressive 41-40  win.  The offense had spots of brilliance Saturday, but this was far overshadowed by the lack of a defensive presence by the Huskers.  The Cardinals put up 40 points on the defense further exposing Nebraska's ever prevalent problem with defending the run game against teams.

Sam Keller and Bo Ruud were the heroes of the game.  Keller was looking more comfortable Saturday and benefited by breaking several Husker records.  Hopefully this confidence can be brought into this Saturday's game against our first Big 12 opponent Iowa State.  Ruud had an equally great game.  Not only was he a force to be reckoned with behind the line, he also made a crucial interception to give Nebraska some hope late in the game (as well as a 2-point lead.)

We will look at the upcoming game against Iowa State on Wednesday.

Nebraska Straps the Pads on for Practice

In an effort to get the Nebraska football team to become more aggressive and tough Coach Callahan has decided to practice with full pads on this week.  According to HuskerExtra, coach Callahan decided that the Huskers need to be more physical after seeing USC break through tackle after tackle with the run game.

I can understand this decision completely.  Nebraska looked smaller and weaker against the Trojans on Saturday.  The Huskers may have not expected the run game to be that strong but keep in mind that most of our team played USC last year and should have known the power and speed that they possess.

It will likely not matter if Nebraska is more physical against Ball State.  They are not known for being big or for being tough.  But remember Husker fans, no one thought that USC's running game was up to snuff.  Oops.

USC Proves Why They Are #1

Some people question USC's ranking at the top but after watching the Nebraska v. USC game this Saturday I am convinced.  The Trojans put on a solid show the whole game and pounded the Husker Blackshirts with their running game.

Nebraska looked good in the first quarter leading 10-7.  But after that USC found that the run game was working NU let the game go.  Stefon Johnson, with the help of the Trojan offensive line ran for 144 yards on only 11 carries.

The Huskers could not find a rhythm on offense until the 4th quarter and by then it was to late.  They scored three touchdowns in the 4th but could not reach 49 points in time.

Many people will look at this game as coach Callahan's litmus test as to whether he should stay on as our coach.  I think that those fans should realize that losing to the #1 team in the country is expected...as much as we Huskers don't want to admit.

Nebraska Prepares for USC

Nebraska is preparing this week for possibly their most important football game of the season.  The Huskers take on the Trojans this Saturday at 7:00 and the whole nation will be watching. 

Nebraska just came off a close win with Wake Forest and will need to work on how many turnovers they allow against USC.  If Nebraska wants to compete against one of the best in the nation they have to keep their hands on the ball, especially Marlon Lucky.  Lucky has lead the league in rushing yards and has become the Husker's "go to guy" on offense lately.  He will be heavily relied on on offense and will be expected to receive the ball just as much as he has been running it.

This will be a big game for QB Sam Keller.  I'm sure ESPN will be dissecting the fact that Keller ran up and down the Trojan defense the last time he faced them as a Sun Devil.  This is his time to prove to critics that he is all that he has said he is.

Nebraska Struggles for Win

It was a nail bitter in Winston-Salem for the Nebraska football fans that watched on Saturday.  The Huskers won 20-17 against Wake Forest putting up win #2 on their undefeated scorecard.

The offense was less than impressive in the game.  Keller had a rough day with three turnovers and only completed 24-41 passes.  Lucky struggled with Wake Forest's tough run defense, he only rushed for 90 yards with 24 carries.  Overall the ability not to run hurt Nebraska which had to throw the ball more than they probably should have.

The defense looked much better than the offense in Saturday's game.  Cornerback Zack Bowman had a clutch interception with six minutes to go which was perhaps the winning turnover of the game.  He and Courtney Grixby both were rough with the receivers and were hassled all game by the Wake Forest fans for pass interference.

On Wednesday we will have an analysis of the USC game this weekend.  It should be the biggest game of the weekend and definitely will be the biggest game of Nebraska's season.

Nebraska Will Keep Callahan Until 2011

Nebraska's athletic director Steve Pederson recently announced that Husker football coach Bill Callahan signed a 5 year deal that will keep him as head coach until 2011. 

Many expected Pederson to make this move.  Pederson was given a similar extension on his contract in the summer and was the person who hired Callahan in 2004.

Callahan has had a mediocre overall record by Nebraska football fan standards.  His record is 25-13 overall and he has never won a Big 12 championship or a BCS bowl game.

Things for Callahan are looking up.  He is expected to have a great year this year and next year he will have all recruits that he personally recruited.

Nebraska Wins Against Nevada

A lot is happening in the world of Nebraska football this week.  If you were lucky enough to get a ticket to the Nebraska vs Nevada football game this Saturday then you saw that the Huskers beat Nevada 52-10.  It was a great starting game for Sam Keller and an even better game for running back Marlon Lucky.

Lucky ran for 233 yards (a career high) and scored four touchdowns against Nevada.  He garnered the Big 12 offensive player of the weed honors and has shown that he is deserving of the #1 spot at running back.

Nebraska moved to #17 in the coaches poll after the win.  The rating may not increase much if we win this Saturday against Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons just came off a disappointing loss to Boston College.

In other news Coach Callahan just received a healthy contract extension until 2011.  I will have more on this Wednesday.
