The University of Nebraska could not have picked a better person to correct the declining football program other than the Nebraska football God himself Tom Osborne. Osborne was chosen yesterday to replace former athletic director Steve Pederson on an interim basis. I think I am not alone in saying that I think Osborne should serve as the athletic director full time. He is a well educated and respected member of the University system and especially in the athletic department.
In his press conference last night, Osborne said some very interesting things about the importance of Nebraska football not only to the University and its players but to the state of Nebraska in general. Osborne said "one thing I learned while I was here under Bob Devaney is the one thing that tends to unify those 93 counties out there is athletics, and the football program in particular." I thought that this really summed up the importance of the football program in the state. And I think Osborne and the general public will agree that on Saturday when half of the NU fans left at half time that that idea was lost.
