This is the 10th year that some of the well-to-do Husker fans have been able to enjoy watching their favorite football team from the comfort of luxury suites built on the west side of Memorial Stadium.
The Omaha World-Herald reported recently that 29 of those suites are up for renewal after the 2008 season, and University of Nebraska officials expect most, if not all, of those leases to be renewed.
The university has spent millions of dollars in upgrading the 80-year-old stadium, including a brand new practice facility, new scoreboards, press facilities and luxury suites in the west and north stadiums. A good chunk of the money for those projects has come from the leasing of luxury suites by some of the big-money supporters of Nebraska football and the University of Nebraska.
Even Nebraska native Larry the Cable Guy has gotten in on the action. He was one of the fans who leased a suite in the new North Stadium facility that is connected to the indoor practice facility built recently.
Leasing one of these suites is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Ten suites were purchased at a cost of $2 million for 25 years. The leases up for renewal now were purchased on a 10-year lease at $75,000 per year. Those renewed leases will set those fans back $85,000 a year for 10 years or $90,000 a year for five years, depending on which option they go with.
