Two plays were the difference between a key Nebraska football triumph and another heartbreaking defeat.
Tyrod Taylor hit Danny Coale on an 81-yard pass that set up a winning 11-yard strike to Dyrell Roberts with :21 left to give Virginia Tech a 16-15 win over Nebraska in an exciting matchup Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.
A boisterous sellout crowd was taken out of the game for almost four quarters by a spirited Nebraska defensive effort that had all but silenced the Hokie offense. Unfortunately, Nebraska's offense was not clicking on all cylinders, as the Huskers had to settle for five Alex Henery field goals for all its scoring on the day.
The Huskers had a golden opportunity to put the game out of reach, but a holding penalty negated a touchdown pass from Zac Lee to Mike McNeil. It ultimately pushed the Huskers out of field goal range, leaving the Hokies with a small window to mount its comeback.
Deep in their own territory, Taylor found Coale, who had slipped past the Husker secondary and made an amazing fingertip grab in the open. He was run down inside the Huskers' 5-yard line, and the defense looked like they were going to make one final stand to end a decade's worth of frustration against top 20 teams.
It was not meant to be, however, as Taylor scrambled and found Roberts in the end zone to give the Hokies the amazing come-from-behind win.
The Huskers are 2-1 on the season and hope to get back on track in a historic game Saturday. Nebraska will take on Louisiana-Lafayette in what will be the 300th consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium, continuing an ongoing record that began in the fall of 1962.
