It's one thing to get beat by a better team. When the better team beats itself...that's something completely different.
The Nebraska football team couldn't seem to get out of its own way Saturday, and the result was a dubious mark in the long, storied tradition of the Husker football program. The team committed eight turnovers, including four in the red zone, and wound up losing to Iowa State 9-7.
The loss marked the first win for the Cyclones in Lincoln since 1977, and it was made possible by an abysmal offensive effort for the second week in a row.
Nebraska took a 7-3 lead in the first quarter when Dontrayevous Robinson scored his first touchdown on a 3-yard run. That would be the only score of the day for the Huskers, who have just two touchdowns in the last eight quarters.
Iowa State used a fake punt to set up what would be the winning touchdown with less than seven minutes to go in the first half, and the second half would prove to be an offensive snoozefest, complete with one Husker miscue after another.
Quarterback Zac Lee was once again ineffective behind center, throwing three interceptions on the day. The Huskers still had a chance to win it at the end, but Lee's final throw of the day was intercepted by Jessie Lee with just over a minute left.
Nebraska will need to find its groove again on offense, and they have a chance to get healthy again with a road trip to face Baylor. The Bears were being looked at as one of the sleeper teams in the Big 12 South this year, but injuries have brought the Bears down to earth.
The Huskers will play another early game, as Saturday's kickoff between Nebraska and Baylor is set for 11:30 a.m. You can get tickets to see the Huskers and the Bears in action now at Ticket Express -- where no Nebraska football game is ever sold out.
