Nebraska to meet Texas for Big 12 title

The Nebraska football team will be looking for its third conference title Saturday when they take on Texas in the Big 12 Championship game at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

This is the third time the Huskers and Longhorns have met for all the marbles, and each team is looking to beat the other for the second time in the Big 12 title game.

In 1996, Nebraska was ranked third and still clinging to hopes of winning an unprecedented third consecutive national title, but those hopes were dashed when unranked Texas pulled off a stunning upset, beating the Huskers 37-27 in the first-ever Big 12 Championship game at St. Louis, Mo.

Three years later, the Huskers returned the favor on the Longhorns, giving coach Frank Solich his first – and only – conference title with a 22-6 win in the 1999 championship game at San Antonio.

The matchup between Texas and Nebraska has not been a good one for the Huskers since the inception of the Big 12 Conference. Although the two teams are 1-1 in the conference title game, Texas owns Nebraska in the series between the two teams since the Big 12 Conference came into being, having won all six regular-season matchups between the two teams.

A lot is riding on this game Saturday night. With a win, the Longhorns will sew up a spot in the BCS National Championship Game against the winner of the Southeastern Conference title game between Florida and Alabama. An upset by Nebraska would secure the team's first 10-win season since 2003, Solich's last year as head coach. That year, then-assistant coach Bo Pelini served as interim head coach for the Huskers' 17-3 win over Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl, a job he would assume on a full-time basis five seasons later.

Nebraksa battles Colorado Friday

The Nebraska football team will look to end the regular season on a high note as they take on Colorado Friday in the season finale at Boulder, Colo.

The series has become an intense rivalry between neighboring states. For many years, Nebraska has dominated the series, but the 1980's brought about a change in attitude with the arrival of Bill McCartney, who declared Nebraska the Buffaloes' chief rival.

It took a few years for the idea to take hold, but when Colorado earned a share of the national title in 1990 and began beating Nebraska in Big Eight play, a new level of intensity was seen in the matchup.

Nebraska has dominated this rivalry in recent years, going 22-10-2 at Colorado in the history of the matchup. Colorado has put up some memorable numbers, however. In the last meeting at Boulder in 2007, the Buffaloes drilled Nebraska 65-51 in what would be the final game for then-coach Bill Callahan. In 2001, Colorado lit up Nebraska for a 62-36 win.

Friday's matchup will be the final game before Nebraska travels to Dallas for the Big 12 Championship game, where they will take on South Division champion Texas. A win in that game would put Nebraska in a BCS bowl game and would also throw a monkey wrench in the battle for the national championship, as Texas is expected to play the winner of the Southeastern Conference championship game for the national title.

Nebraska wins Big 12 North Division title

The Nebraska football team wrapped up its first Big 12 North Division championship in three years with a 17-3 win over Kansas State at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.

Playing before the 304th consecutive sellout, the Huskers allowed a field goal on the Wildcats' opening possession, then employed a bend-don't-break strategy that kept Kansas State out of the end zone the rest of the night.

It was Senior Day for the Huskers, and while all of the seniors received a great ovation from the crowd of more than 85,000, the biggest cheers were saved for defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who has established himself as one of the best members of the Blackshirt defense in recent memory. He went out in style as well, recording nine tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Mike McNeil caught a touchdown pass to put Nebraska up 10-3 at halftime, and the Huskers made it a two-touchdown game on their first drive of the second half when Roy Helu scored on a touchdown run.

After that, it was up to the Blackshirts, who stopped Kansas State in Nebraska territory four times, including a key fumble forced by senior Larry Asante that was recovered at the Nebraska 5-yard line.

The win assured the Huskers of a shot at the Big 12 Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 5 in Dallas, Texas. The Huskers will take on third-ranked Texas in that championship matchup, with the winner guaranteed a bid in one of the BCS bowls.

First, though, the Huskers need to finish off the regular season, and they will do so this Friday on the road as they take on traditional rival Colorado. The Buffaloes are playing for pride at this point, as they take a 3-8 record into Friday's battle with the 8-3 Huskers.

Nebraska faces Kansas State for North Division title

It should be a wild night in Memorial Stadium Saturday night, as the Nebraska football team looks to lock up its first Big 12 North Division title under coach Bo Pelini with a win over Kansas State.

The Wildcats weren't expected to do much in 2009, but have been rejuvenated with the return of Bill Snyder, the coach who brought the Wildcats from the doldrums to become one of the most exciting teams in the Big 12 Conference.

Nebraska is riding the wave of a mid-season resurgence after frustrating back-to-back losses to Texas Tech and Iowa State. After beating Baylor, the Huskers got a huge win with a 10-3 upset of then-ranked Oklahoma. That momentum carried over into last week as the Huskers broke a 10-10 halftime tie and went on to beat Kansas on the road, 31-17.

Nebraska is 4-2 in conference play, one-half game ahead of the Wildcats. That means Saturday's 6:45 p.m. matchup is for all the marbles, as a win would clinch the North Division title for either team.

Nebraska-Oklahoma game in prime time

The Nebraska football team will make at least one more prime-time appearance on national television this season, as this week's matchup with Oklahoma will be a night game.

After posting a 20-10 win at Baylor last week, the Huskers will take on the Sooners in a classic Big Eight matchup at Memorial Stadium. The game is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ABC.

One other Nebraska football game is confirmed to be a TV game yet this season, as the Huskers' regular-season finale at Colorado on Nov. 27 will be televised. That game is set for a 2:30 p.m. CST kickoff on ABC.

Nebraska's remaining two games, at Kansas and home against Kansas State, could also be televised. An announcement on those games will come about a week before each game.
