It's still early in the season, but fans with Nebraska football tickets have enjoyed watching a Nebraska football team develop into a top 10 program so far during the 2011 season.
Nebraska is 2-0 after opening with a 40-7 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga and an exciting 42-29 win over Fresno State last week. Nebraska has shown signs of big-play abilities on offense, and while the defense took some lumps in last week's win over the Bulldogs, they are looking more and more solid by the week.
The big surprise for the Huskers so far has been on special teams. With the loss of placekicking standout Alex Henery to graduation, there was a lot of concern as to how the Huskers would fill that void after Henery's remarkable four-year run as the Nebraska kicker.
They seem to have found an answer in Kearney junior Brett Maher, who drilled four field goals – including a 50-yarder in to the win – in Nebraska's season-opening win over Chattanooga. Maher has shown very good range so far this season and is proving to be a worthy candidate to replace the dependable toe of Henery.
Another positive has been in the return game, where Ameer Abdullah has become an explosive threat on kick returns. He pulled off a key 100-yard return for a score in the Huskers' big win over Fresno State last week, and he is among the leaders nationally in average return yards, making him a major threat to score every time he gets a chance to return a kick.
You'll get to see the Huskers in action one more time during the non-conference schedule. This Saturday, Nebraska takes on Washington in what should be an exciting non-conference matchup at Memorial Stadium. The following week, Nebraska hits the road for a battle against an improving Wyoming squad in Laramie, Wyo. It will be Nebraska's first trip to visit its farthest-west neighboring state, and there is sure to be a group of Husker fans traveling across the border to see the Huskers and Cowboys in action during Nebraska's final game before Big Ten Conference play begins in October.
