One of the most talked-about recruits in recent memory among fans with Nebraska football tickets has been Kansas high school standout Bubba Starling.
The 6-foot-5, 195-pounder was one of the shining stars in the 2011 Nebraska football recruiting class, and he was also one of the most talked-about baseball players in all of the country, being tabbed as the fifth pick in the Major League Baseball entry draft by the Kansas City Royals.
With the start of fall practice in preparation for the 2011 Husker football season getting underway this week, many are wondering just how long Starling will be in the Husker camp. Is the possibility of playing for one of the most storied teams in all of college football worth more than the opportunity to play baseball in the big leagues?
Starling has mega-agent Scott Boras negotiating with the Royals right now, and there is talk that Boras is seeking a $10 million payday for Starling to sign with the team.
The Lincoln Journal Star reported that, with about a week left until the Aug. 15, 11 p.m. CDT deadline, the Royals will have to pony up some serious money to get Starling's services as a big bat and outstanding defensive outfielder. With no deal announced yet, Starling is strapping on the pads and working out with the Huskers in preparation for the 2011 season.
Starling isn't saying much publicly, but did text a message to a Kansas City Star reporter that the process was getting stressful. He said Nebraska's practices are "the hardest thing I've ever done," but seems to be enjoying the experience in spite of the stress of deciding between the gridiron and the diamond.
Regardless of where Starling ends up, you will get to see the Huskers in action this coming season with eight great home matchups and four solid road tests as part of their first year in the Big Ten Conference.
