Will Bubba stay or will he go? Time is running out

One of the most talked-about recruits in recent memory among fans with Nebraska football tickets has been Kansas high school standout Bubba Starling.
The 6-foot-5, 195-pounder was one of the shining stars in the 2011 Nebraska football recruiting class, and he was also one of the most talked-about baseball players in all of the country, being tabbed as the fifth pick in the Major League Baseball entry draft by the Kansas City Royals.

Starling isn't saying much publicly, but did text a message to a Kansas City Star reporter that the process was getting stressful. He said Nebraska's practices are "the hardest thing I've ever done," but seems to be enjoying the experience in spite of the stress of deciding between the gridiron and the diamond.

Nebraska players showing up on award watch lists

Fans with Nebraska football tickets should be on the lookout for Lavonte David.
And Jared Crick.
And Alfonzo Dennard.
These guys are among several Huskers who are already showing up on preseason "watch lists" for several notable postseason awards leading into the 2011 college football season.
David, a senior linebacker, has already had his name added to four watch lists for the upcoming campaign. He recently was named among 51 candidates for the Butkus Award, which is given to the nation's top linebacker.
David, who recorded a school-record 152 tackles last year, was already on three other watch lists prior to the Butkus announcement. He is one of three Huskers in line for the Lombardi Award and is also among a trio of Nebraska players tabbed as candidates for the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy.
Joining David on the Bednarik and Nagurski watch lists are Alfonzo Dennard and Jared Crick. Crick and Cameron Meredith are on the Lombardi list with David.
Crick is the lone Husker being considered for the Outland Trophy, which is given to the nation's outstanding defensive player. Dennard is also being considered for the Thorpe Award.
Three other Huskers are on trophy watch lists heading into the 2011 season. Kyler Reed is in line for the Mackey Award, Taylor Martinez is a candidate for the Maxwell Award, and Mike Caputo is on the list for the Rimington Trophy.

Pelini connection should help recruiting in Ohio

Longtime fans with Nebraska football tickets remember the days when the Huskers coaching staff would make their way to Texas or Florida to land some big-name talent.

The Buckeyes have traditionally landed a lot of the big-name talent that resides within the state's borders, but Pelini's reputation as one of the top young head coaches in the country is making the Huskers a player for some of the top-tier talent in Ohio right now.
While Texas, Florida and California generally have a bigger population base to work from as far as football talent is concerned, the blue-collar ethic and tough-as-nails mentality that Ohio athletes are known for makes them a great addition for the Huskers. Especially with their recent move to the Big Ten Conference, it provides a much-needed chance at exposing the program and the university to student-athletes who might otherwise not give Nebraska a second look.
Recruiting experts believe that Nebraska's move into the Big Ten is going to give them several new avenues to recruit the kind of talent that will keep them among the nation's most talked-about teams for a long time to come. Ohio standout says he's coming to Nebraska

Fans with Nebraska football tickets should be very excited with the Nebraska recruiting class that is starting to develop for 2012.
Earlier this week, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported that Ohio defensive end standout Greg McMullen was choosing Nebraska over several big-name institutions, including his home-state teams at Ohio State and Cincinnati, fellow Big Ten schools Michigan State, Purdue and Northwestern, and traditional recruiting power Notre Dame.
McMullen is a 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end from Akron, playing for Archbishop Hoban High School. He is noted as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and is among the top 100 prospects in the nation for the Class of 2012.
During his junior year, McMullen recorded 55 tackles and 8 1/2 quarterback sacks. He has good size and is being touted as a potential standout at defensive tackle.
The Journal-Star reported that Nebraska will not have a big recruiting class from a numbers perspective, as they will have to stay within the limits of the required number of scholarship players on a roster. The newspaper said McMullen would be among a potential group of up to 15 players Nebraska will sign when signing day comes the first Wednesday in February of 2012.
As it stands now, Nebraska has four verbal commitments with McMullen's announcement. He joins Jordan Westerkamp, a wide receiver from Illinois; Michael Rose, a linebacker from Missouri; and Ben Cotton, a tight end from Lincoln and the son of Nebraska assistant coach and former Husker standout Barney Cotton.

Huskers are selected in NFL, UFL drafts

Fans with Nebraska football tickets had an opportunity to see some tremendous football that will now take their talents to the professional ranks.
Seven Huskers were taken in the annual NFL draft, and three other players were tabbed by the United Football League, with two of those players staying in state to play with the Omaha Nighthawks.
For the second year in a row, a Husker was taken in the first round of the NFL draft, as strong safety Prince Amukamara was selected as the 19th overall pick by the New York Giants. The 2010 Thorpe Award finalist was the 34th Husker to be taken in the first round in the draft's history, and it was the second time in as many years, as Detroit took Ndamukong Suh as the No. 2 pick last year.
While Amukamara was taken on Thursday night, it would be Saturday afternoon before the remaining Huskers taken in the draft would find out their destinations.
Two Huskers were taken in the fourth round, and they will go from teammates to rivals. Running back Roy Helu Jr. was taken by the Washington Redskins with the 108th pick, while kick Alex Henery was taken with the 120th pick by the Philadelphia Eagles.
DeJon Gomes was taken in the fifth round by the Washington Redskins, and a third Husker was taken by the Redskins in the next round when Niles Paul. It is the second time the Redskins have taken three Huskers with consecutive picks, as they took three Huskers back in the 1975 draft.
Keith Williams was taken in the sixth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he will also be rivals with a former teammate, as Eric Haag was taken in the seventh round by the Cleveland Browns.
On Monday, the UFL had its draft for its five-team league, and three Huskers were taken in the six-round draft.
Ricky Henry was taken by the Hartford Colonials in the fourth round, while the Omaha Nighthawks took Mike Smith and D.J. Jones in the fifth and sixth rounds, respectively.

Nebraska needs help in backfield

If there is one thing fans with Nebraska football tickets got out of last week's annual Spring Game, it was this scary thought –- Nebraska needed more depth at I-back.
Rex Burkhead has made a name for himself the past couple of years in the Husker backfield, and he put on a solid performance in this spring's intrasquad scrimmage at Memorial Stadium, cranking out more than eight yards per carry after his 11-carry, 91-yard performance.
Burkhead showed the potential to be a big ground-gainer for the Husker offense this year, when you consider that more than half of his carries went for at least seven yards. You also don't see a 12-yard touchdown run he had in the game, as that play was called back on a penalty.
Burkhead showed an ability to make people miss at the point of attack, but the problem is that he is the only proven commodity in the backfield right now as the Huskers get ready for their first Big Ten campaign this fall.
Barring injury or some other unfortunate circumstance, the junior will be the man in the backfield for the Huskers this season, unless some of the walk-ons and younger players can step up and provide a second or third option for the Husker ground game this season.

Carnes has the pedigree for a Husker quarterback

Nebraska football fans who remember the glory days of the 1990's may experience a little deja vu if Brion Carnes gets under center.
The redshirt freshman quarterback from Bradenton, Fla., has all the moves and is showing a lot of promise during spring practices, according to the Husker football coaches.
And for those who have been around a while, his moves might remind you of another guy who played quarterback at Nebraska and, oddly enough, came to Lincoln from Bradenton, Fla.: Tommie Frazier.
Frazier, of course, led the Huskers to back-to-back national championships in 1994-1995, and now his second cousin, Carnes, is looking to follow in his relative's footsteps and do the same thing at Nebraska.
Carnes has spent the last 18 months studying the Husker offense. He did a lot of work on the scout team last year and has already impressed coaches with his skills on the field and his coachable demeanor.
His fellow players are also complimenting his work, saying that he is stepping up into the role as a leader on the field and a playmaker.
His work ethic comes from his days in Florida, where he was a four-year starter at Manatee High School and led his team to a state championship. It looked like he was going to sign with Western Kentucky, but at the last minute he decided he wanted to follow in his cousin's footsteps.

Nebraska to face Washington in Holiday Bowl

Nebraska football tickets for the Holiday Bowl will give fans a chance to see the Huskers in a rare rematch situation, as Nebraska will take on Washington in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30 in San Diego, Calif.
Earlier this season, the Huskers pounced on Washington on the road and came away with a 56-21, helping Nebraska on its way to a 10-2 regular season and a bid in the Big 12 Conference Championship, where they lost to Oklahoma.
Washington played one of its worst games of the season in their loss to Nebraska, but came alive late in the season and finished with a 6-6 record, earning a trip to a bowl game for the first time in several seasons.
This is the third time the Huskers have played in the Holiday Bowl, and it is also the third time they have faced a Pac 10 team in this game. Nebraska lost to Arizona in the 1998 Holiday Bowl and shut the Wildcats out in last year's classic. Nebraska is 1-3 against Pac 10 teams, including a loss to Arizona State in the 1975 Fiesta Bowl and a loss to Stanford in the 1941 Rose Bowl.
This is not the first time Nebraska has had a bowl rematch with a team they had played earlier in the year. Back in 1978, then-coach Tom Osborne defeated Oklahoma for the first time in his career, but when the Huskers lost to Missouri the following week, the Orange Bowl decided to pit the Huskers and Sooners in a rematch, which was won by Oklahoma.

Lee steps in, gives offense a lift

Back in the preseason, there were a lot of questions surrounding the quarterback position and fans with Nebraska football tickets were wondering who would be the starter for the Nebraska football team this fall.
Fans were surprised, and pleasantly so, when freshman Taylor Martinez got the nod and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, thanks to his quick decision making and explosive running ability.
Texas, though, corralled the freshman signal-caller, forcing coach Bo Pelini to turn to a seasoned veteran to give the offense a lift. Zac Lee, last year's starting quarterback who led the Huskers to a Holiday Bowl win, came in and directed the offense to a field goal, keeping the Huskers in the game before they lost to Texas 20-13.
Lee has been supportive of his teammate, both on and off the field. He stepped in when called upon and showed his leadership skills. He had two probable touchdown passes dropped, but otherwise was effective in keeping the Huskers in it.
